Important facts about the importance of the interview
Wagoner and Gray asked directors about the level of importance of interview and academic variables in selecting residency candidates. The survey revealed that of 31 variables, directors rated the interview as the most important in the selection process.

Results suggest that the most important criteria in Emergency Medicine (EM) resident selection are those that are specifically related to EM with EM rotation grade the most important factor (4.79/5.0). The applicant interview was the second most important selection factor for EM residents (4.62/5.0), “as it is for other specialties. Much concrete and personal information about the applicant’s interactive skills and mannerisms can be obtained from the interview. Similarly, the interview provides the opportunity to obtain more information or clarify deficiencies in the interviewee’s application.”
